Humanities
Return to SubjectsThe Humanities department coprises of both history and Geography and aims is to give students a broad and rich curriculum which complements the teaching of core subjects and encourages students to develop a knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Students will be able to expand their knowledge, develop analytical skills and acquire vocabulary which will benefit them both in other subject areas and beyond the classroom. Humanities subjects allow students to develop literacy and numeracy skills as well as an understanding of concepts such as change and continuity, cause and consequence, similarity and difference. The teaching of Humanities allows students to develop their cultural capital through what they learn in the classroom, as well as through a range of educational visits. Students also gain an understanding of issues which affect them locally as well as national and international issues. The relevance of Humanities as a subject is evident in the links we make between what students learn in the classroom and current events.
The link between Humanities subjects is the human experience - what we use the earth for, how the earth has shaped human activity, how beliefs shape attitudes of people towards each other, and how the experience of the past has shaped the present. History teaches us about our past, but helps us to understand the present. Geography prepares us for our future by allowing us to understand places and the relationships between people and their environments.
