Sheena Dempsey Author Event

The young people at Ferndene and Stephenson had a fantastic time joining the online author event with Sheena Dempsey and Read for Good. Everyone loved hearing about her creative ideas, learning how she develops her characters and discovering what inspires her stories and illustrations.

Sheena's enthusiasm and sense of fun shone through and there were lots of laughs as she shared her behind-the-scenes insights into her work. She writes and illustrates her own stories and started the session by showing them an illustration of herself and explaining why it's important to show readers certain things. She then showed the young people how to draw a penguin like Pablo and Splash.

The session was engaging, interactive, and full of imagination, leaving the young people feeling inspired to read, write, and draw their own stories. It was wonderful to see so many of the cohort excited about books and eager to explore their creativity after such an enjoyable event. Sheena even read them a section of her newest novel.

The young people even got to do a quiz at the end, which was penguin-themed.

Did you know that the tallest penguin to ever live was six foot and eight inches tall? It was known as the 'Mega Penguin'.

Also, penguins huddle together for warmth, which protects them from freezing temperatures.

Sheena was asked questions at the end of the session. She told them that it takes six to seven months to create a new book because she wants to make sure the images are as good as the plot.
